Temporary average speed cameras installation to commence on A75

28/07/2025
Work will begin this week to install temporary average speed cameras on the A75 between Newton Stewart and Creetown as Police Scotland Safety Cameras continue to test the new technologies capabilities.
The cameras, which have previously been deployed along the A836 and A82, will now be used to boost existing mobile enforcement locations on the A75 between Newton Stewart and Creetown. The remote and exposed nature of the road will also allow the new camera technology to be tested in extreme and inclement weather conditions.
The temporary average speed cameras operate by making use of renewable energy using a combination of solar and bio-methanol sources.? They will be powered by off-grid sources which enables the technology to be deployed at locations which had been previously isolated for fixed infrastructure.
Police Scotland Safety Cameras have several locations along the A75, Dumfries and Galloway, where they regularly enforce using mobile technology. By identifying sections of this road which would benefit from the introduction of the temporary average speed cameras it allows mobile resources to be allocated elsewhere within Dumfries and Galloway.
Construction works will commence from 28 July 2025 which would result in enforcement from mid-August 2025.
Alan Bowater, West Safety Camera Area Manager, ‘Temporary average speed cameras have proven to be an effective tool in improving road safety across Scotland. Their deployment on routes such as the A82 and the A836 has led to notable reduction in dangerous driving and injury collisions. These systems are a vital part of our strategy to address speeding and protect all road users - especially in areas where permanent infrastructure may not be in place.’
